Reclaim Disciplined Focus & Harness Your Energy Flow

Feeling scattered and overworked? For me, I’ve found the answer lies in how I’m spending my most valuable resources: my time, energy, and attention. In a world full of distractions, it’s easy to get pulled in a hundred different directions. But when I’m not disciplined, selective, and deliberate with my focus, I’m essentially giving away control over my life force and energy.

I remind myself of this simple truth: whatever I give my attention to rules my life energy and time. And time is a resource I can never get back. By consciously choosing where to direct my focus, I can stop a costly leak of my most valuable assets.

3 Shifts I Made In My Own Practice for Mastering Energy Flow

  1. I identify My Energy Leaks. I think about my daily routine and ask where I’m spending time without a clear purpose. This could be agreeing to or doing things that aren’t a “hell yes” for me, unscheduled social media activity, or mindless escapism. I write down a few of these culprits and calculate what they are costing me in business time, money, and overall life results. Identifying energetic leaks is the first step to resolving them.
  2. I am deliberate, not reactive. Instead of reacting to whatever is vying for my attention, I take a moment to be intentional. When facing a high-stakes or pressing issue, I practice a technique from my scuba diving training: STOP-BREATHE-THINK.
    • First, I STOP what I’m doing
    • Next, I BREATHE—inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 4, exhaling for 4, and staying empty for 4. This simple practice settles my nervous system and improves my mental clarity, finally
    • I THINK and start the critical thinking process before I respond. Before I open an email, check a notification, or agree to a new task, I ask myself: “Does this align with my most important goals right now?” By choosing to focus on what truly matters, I ensure my energy is spent on activities that move me forward.
  3. I Invest My Time Like It’s My Currency. I’ve come to see my time as a non-renewable resource, just like my money. Just as I wouldn’t carelessly spend my finances on things I don’t need, I don’t carelessly spend my time on things that don’t serve my purpose. I think of my time and attention as valuable currency and invest it wisely in the people, projects, and activities that will yield the greatest returns for my life and well-being.
